Who We Are?

  • Founded in 2020 by John Tobias (ESPN Statistician & UNC-Charlotte Sports Analytics Professor)

  • To teach sports analytics to underrepresented minority & female high school students by broadening the appeal of STEM and providing the proper resources to breed successful careers in the sports analytics industry.

  • To develop a national network of Sports Analytics Summer Camps where high-school students meet professionals in the sports industry and are educated on how analytics impacts several genres in sports.

Roadmap

What is the problem?

The significant gap in the number of minorities and women in the sports analytics field.

How are we solving the problem?

Establishing free sports analytics summer camps across the country to bring awareness, followed by access, followed by opportunity.

Why do we need your partnership?

To help create more summer camps and opportunities like this for minority and female high school students at absolutely no cost to the students.

  • According to Front Office Sports, “African Americans & Hispanics make up less than 9% of sports stats & analytics jobs in the United States.”

  • According to Forbes, “Women hold only about 13% of sports analytic jobs in the United States.”

  • The lack of knowledge, access and resources are primary reasons that leads to the lack of opportunities

  • There are few proposed reasons for the gender gap including a lack of STEM education for women at young ages and a lack of mentorship in the sports analytics industry.

Meet the Team

John Tobias

Founder

  • John Tobias has traveled as a TV Sports Statistician for 15 years. He has worked the last three Olympics, the 2019 World Cup, and hundreds of college football and basketball games with ESPN. Throughout this time, John has only seen one African American, one female, and no Latinos that are his colleagues. Observing this, along with the lack of underrepresented groups in sports analytics departments on professional franchises, John decided to not just identify a problem, but offer a solution by launching the non-profit, Strength in Numbers. John is also a Sports Analytics Professor and newly appointed Program Director at UNC-Charlotte's Sports Analytics Department.

  • It's quite problematic to see such a lack of diversity in the sports analytics industry for so many years. But this isn't necessarily an indictment on any sports network or professional franchise. The main issue is simply a lack of awareness. Many underrepresented groups who love sports and data, don't know these wonderful positions exist. Therefore, it starts with awareness, which leads to access, which then leads to opportunity. It's my mission to do my part to create a level playing field and increase diversity in the sports stats and analytics industry.
