About
From courtside to the classroom, John Tobias has witnessed the pulse of sports from a unique vantage point. For 15 years, he’s crunched numbers behind the scenes as a TV Sports Statistician, his expertise gracing the Olympics, the roaring stadiums of the World Cup, and countless college arenas across America. His unique perspective has given him insights that are reshaping the field of sports analytics.
Amidst the dazzling athleticism, John noticed a troubling silence. In a sea of faces, diversity was startingly absent: one African American colleague, a single female peer, not a Latino in sight. This glaring disparity wasn’t just limited to the broadcast booths—it echoed through the analytics departments of professional sports franchises nationwide. This is not just a problem; it's a call to action.
That’s when John decided to rewrite the playbook. Enter Strength in Numbers – a non-profit born from John’s vision to transform the landscape of sports analytics. As the Sports Analytics and Program Director at UNC-Charlotte, John isn’t just teaching numbers; he’s fostering a revolution. His mission? To ensure that the next generation of sports analysts reflects the diversity in the field and the stands.
Through Strength and Numbers and his academic role, John is working to transform the landscape of sports analytics, opening doors for underrepresented groups and enriching the field with broader perspectives.
"It's quite problematic to see such a lack of diversity in the sports analytics industry for so many years,” says Tobias. "But this isn't necessarily an indictment on any sports network or professional franchise. The main issue is simply a lack of awareness. Many underrepresented groups who love sports and data don't know these wonderful positions exist. Therefore, it starts with awareness, which leads to access, which then leads to opportunity. It's my mission to create a level playing field and increase diversity in the sports stats and analytics industry.”
